Yes, you all know hair can start looking old as you age but also when you are young if you don’t take care of it. Using heat daily, not hydrating it enough and other environmental elements can quickly age your hair.
“Hair ages from environmental damage and mechanical reasons, which break down the hair fiber, fade your color, and cause strands to feel dry and brittle.” ~ Harper’s Bazaar
Start in the Shower
Don’t use just any old shampoo and conditioner — look for ones that also repair split ends, enhance shine, and tame unruly hair. While applying conditioner daily can work wonders for hydrating damaged tresses, shampooing no more than three times a week helps your scalp replenish its natural oils. Larry Chowning of Bodytrends Spa uses and recommends Number 4 L’eau de Mare Hydrating Shampoo. Number 4 L’eau de Mer Hydrating Shampoo moisturizes and color protects while replenishing splendour. Vitamin B5 properties create shine and condition, improving your hair?s bourgeoisie strength, keeping it clean from any stylistic sin. Follow up with Number 4 L’eau de Mer Hydrating Condition moisturizes and helps repair split ends, dryness, frizz and really bad stylistic habits. Its Vitamin B5 formula creates shine and condition, improving your hair’s bourgeoisie strength, keeping it clean and static free.
Eren Moore of Urban Retreat in Edmond recommends Kevin Murphy products. All of them hydrate your hair and truly are superb. The Shampoo/Conditioner line called Hydrate Me is a must have. Think of it as a hair concealer as it disguises the damage. It will nourish dry hair and make split ends unrecognizable. This formulation is still packed with antioxidants as this gives the hair a healthy glow and stops the hair from losing any more moisture.
Invest in a Hair Mask
A good hair mask is like conditioner on steroids — it can transform your locks after only one use. Post-shampoo, apply it to wet hair for three to five minutes starting at your ears (to avoid weighing down your roots). Apply a mask nightly for the first week, then once a week for continued softness.
Coconut oil is, hands down, one of the most effective hair treatments for a very wide variety of hair issues. Many claim that coconut oil actually works better than any man-made treatments on the market, and because it’s 100% natural, and it’s free of silicones, alcohols, and other chemicals that can aggravate sensitive skin and hair. It works incredibly well for repairing damaged hair that has been over-processed, heat damaged, or is just naturally dry. Coconut oil is also anti-fungal in nature, making it a perfect natural anti-dandruff treatment, or as a preventative treatment for dandruff. It’s a great regular hair treatment for maintaining very healthy hair and scalp when used as a part of your regular haircare routine (1-4 times per month). To get long, thick, super soft hair: massage organic coconut oil in your hair 2-4 times a week (leave in 10-25 mins) wash out with shampoo. Do this until hair is growing and healthy (no split-ends) and reduce to 2-4 times a month.
You can get coconut anywhere really … online, grocery store, vitamin store. I get mine at my local grocery store so I’m not going to advocate any specific brand, just make sure it’s pure.
Eren Moore of Urban Retreat in Edmond also recommends Kevin Murphy Born.Again once a month. It is such a unique product that contains ingredients that are so small in their molecular size and weight; they can pass into the cortex of the hair instantly. Essential oils are the force that brings KEVIN.MURPHY products to life. They are heat and light sensitive. Once you open them to the air and light they become energized: moisturising, repairing, and regenerating.
1. Trim your ends, even just a centimeter with sharp scissors. Doing it with dull scissors makes the problem worse. Using a hair oil on the ends helps too.
2. Be careful how you comb. If combing your hair is a challenge after washing, do it while you have conditioner on it in the shower with a wide tooth comb. Start at the ends and work your was up.
3. Use color boosting shampoos and conditioners. It’s tough to keep color-treated hair looking great in between treatments if you don’t use products that contain silicone (which adds shine) and keratin. Keratin is particularly important because it helps repair the hair cuticles that are opened up every time you apply color. To really gild your hair, apply SPF protectant sprays before heading out into the sun. One of my fave places is Urban Retreat in Edmond. They have a great Keratin Treatment.
4. Boost volume and thickness. Ask your stylist for a glaze treatment. It can be clear, or add a sheen of color. Glazes not only add shine, they bond to your hair strand, giving it a thicker feel and more texture. Many glazes can also be applied at home, saving you from visiting a salon every few weeks.

Larry Chowning of Bodytrends Spa uses Black 15in1 Miracle Hair Treatment and it is a great solution to providing beautiful, healthy-looking hair. It is for all hair types. Silk proteins and keratin moisturize, strengthen, soften and smooth as pro-vitamin B5 seals the hair shaft to retain maximum benefits. Protective antioxidants and green tea fend off damaging environmental factors to preserve moisture and shine. Aloe vera and gotu kola help provide health benefits to both the hair and scalp.
A GREAT BRUSH
I never brush my hair, but use a wide tooth comb. My tresses are very fine and I’ve managed to have very minimal hair loss, hair in the sink or hair in the shower. However, for those of you with thick, long mains, using a Bristled Brush is a must. For best results, you’ll want a brush that has BOTH synthetic (nylon) bristles AND boar bristles. The mix creates the perfect brush: The boar bristles are gentle, while the synthetic bristles help hair dry faster. A good brush helps create shine by distributing oils from your scalp evenly over hair. It acts as a detangler and it won’t harm the scalp or tug at strands.
What to buy? For a great selection, go to Sephora.com and pick up a back boar bristle paddle brush.. They have a range of prices as well.
